RESCON: Pioneering Research and Innovation in Residential Construction

November 20, 2023

At buildingSMART Canada (bSC), we are continually inspired by the commitment and support of our strategic sponsors, whose contributions are vital in driving innovation and research in the Canadian AECOOM (architecture, engineering, construction, owners, operators, and managers) sector. Among these distinguished partners is the Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON), a leading voice and advocate for residential builders in Ontario. In this post, we shine a spotlight on RESCON’s significant role and their latest groundbreaking research initiative.

RESCON: Building the Future

RESCON, Ontario’s premier association for residential builders, has long been recognized for its leadership in fostering innovation within the industry. As champions of research and development, they understand that the future of our communities and homes hinges on continuous learning and adaptation.

Research Initiative: Streamlining Development Approvals

One of RESCON’s current initiatives is sponsorship of a critical bSC research project in collaboration with David Amborski at Toronto Metropolitan University. The project, titled “Streamlining Development Approvals: Processes, Requirements, Metrics, & Opportunities,” aims to dissect and improve the complex development approval process in Ontario.

Understanding the Process

The development approval process in Ontario is notoriously complex, involving multiple authorities, each with unique sub-processes and requirements. This complexity results in inefficiencies that hinder land development and housing projects.

Goals and Objectives

RESCON’s sponsored research seeks to gain a comprehensive understanding of the development approvals process and its impact on land use. The objectives include:

  • Analyzing the existing requirements, processes, and key metrics within the development approvals sphere.
  • Examining the factors influencing land use, supply, and availability, crucial elements in addressing the housing crisis.

This research initiative is particularly timely, as it addresses the current housing crisis in Ontario. By exploring ways to make the development approval process more efficient, RESCON is contributing to the broader goal of driving affordable housing across the province.

Acknowledging RESCON’s Contribution

We at buildingSMART Canada extend our heartfelt gratitude to RESCON for their unwavering support and for sponsoring this vital research. Their dedication not only benefits the residential construction sector but also has far-reaching impacts on community development and housing accessibility in Ontario. As we continue to navigate the complexities of the construction industry, it is the support and foresight of organizations like RESCON that enable us to push boundaries and drive meaningful change.
